Azerbaijani President says chapter of conflict with Armenia is closed
Speaking at a panel discussion during an international economic forum, Aliyev said the decision was reached mutually by both sides’ leadership. "It was a joint decision by (the) Armenian and Azerbaijani leadership to close that chapter (of war) and to see the opportunities for peace," he said. The panel was also attended by Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan.
Addressing questions about the effectiveness of multilateral institutions, Aliyev criticized international bodies for failing to resolve the conflict over the past three decades. He noted that despite numerous resolutions adopted by international organizations, including global and regional bodies, none led to tangible outcomes.
"All of them did not materialize until we took (the) situation into our hands, and we did it. We restored justice, international law, our sovereignty, territorial integrity, and then we achieved peace," he said, arguing that reliance on international institutions had proven ineffective.
Turning to regional cooperation, Aliyev said that following the establishment of peace, Azerbaijan began engaging in economic collaboration and export activity with Armenia. "Azerbaijan lifted all the restrictions on (the) transportation of cargoes to Armenia from Kazakhstan, from Russia, and now we got a request from (the) Armenian side to provide transit from Armenia to Russia," he said.
He added that Azerbaijan had already taken steps to open regional transport routes. "So we de facto, unilaterally opened the corridors. Yes, the transportation goes through (neighboring) Georgia, but one day it will go through Armenia. One day Armenia will go directly through Azerbaijan, and that day is not too far away," he added.
Aliyev also said that normalization efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia are progressing alongside talks between Türkiye and Armenia. According to him, both tracks are moving in tandem and "will definitely end in parallel with the establishment of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Armenia, and Azerbaijan and Armenia at the same time."
